Celebrating (and protecting) BC rivers
RATIO wrote this on Sep 14, 2015

Each year on the last Sunday in September, a series of locally planned events take place across the province to highlight recreational, environmental, economic and aesthetic importance of BC’s rivers. This year, BC Rivers Day coincides with World Rivers Day on Sunday September 27, 2015. BC Rivers Day is a chance to celebrate the province’s rivers, and to reflect on what we stand to lose if we fail to take better care of them. This September 27 is a day to get out and experience British Columbia’s spectacular river heritage.

RATIO works on a number of projects that are related to BC’s water assets;  from watershed projects to reservoirs to water treatment plants. Of special interest for this blog (and in honour of BC and World Rivers day) is Kanaka Creek where  our client, Metro Vancouver, and their partners are working to raise funds for the  Kanaka Creek Watershed Stewardship Centre.  Plans are well underway for this new centre  of education, stewardship, community engagement and research for the entire Kanaka Creek Watershed, anchored by a new salmon rearing facility. On September 27, from 11 – 3pm,  Kanaka Creek will be part of the Rivers Day events happening around the province.

Protecting provincial waterways has become one of the most pressing environmental issues facing British Columbians. Results of a survey conducted by the Ministry of Forests and the Ministry of Environment Lands and Parks lend support to this claim. Survey results indicate that pollution of rivers, lakes and coastal waters is the number one environmental concern of British Columbians. BC and World Rivers Day helps to promote responsible care and stewardship of our rivers and waterways.
