The  groundbreaking ceremony for the $26.5 million new Surrey courthouse addition and expansion kicks off the construction phase of this high profile public safety project.

The project planning and design work were done in collaboration between RATIO and  NORR Architects & Planners. RATIO is BC’s foremost courthouse architecture firm and design expert with dozens of courthouse and court-related facilities completed over the years.  Mike Mammone, RATIO Principal, and Supporting Architect for the project, “We are proud to have worked with the Ministry of Technologies, Innovation and Citizens’ Services, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of the Attorney General and all the dedicated Sheriffs and court administration staff at the Surrey Provincial Court. We are looking forward to working with Yellowridge Construction to complete this facility.”

The Surrey courthouse is the busiest in the province, handling the largest criminal caseload of any jurisdiction. It also has the second highest volume of civil small claims cases in B.C.

The new construction is expected to be finished early 2018 and will feature:

Three new courtrooms and two new hearing rooms.

Updated technology to handle advanced evidence presentation.

Wheelchair accessible witness and jury box.

An integrated video conference system to allow for more remote appearances.

Updated  court administration and public service areas
