A large, multi-structure centre dedicated to the preservation and representation of the cultures of the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations.
Ratio (Architect of Record) worked with Alfred Waugh Architects to design this centre in Whistler, BC. The Centre needed to facilitate visitor flow and integrate a modern theatre, while properly respecting and representing First Nations cultures.
Built out of respect for the land, the Centre acts as both the literal and figurative doorway to the forest. The project epitomises responsible land stewardship, a traditional value held by First Nations including the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations, and contributes to Whistler’s reputation as an innovator in environmentally sustainable development.
The facility was created in consultation with the Nations. The centre is evocative of a Squamish Nation Longhouse and an Lil’wat Istken (earthen pit house), while also following the modern principles of sustainable design. The 38,000 square foot complex consists of three buildings on a 4.35 acre site. The centre is anchored by the monumental Great Hall and incorporates both indoor and outdoor exhibition spaces.
