Ratio was commissioned to design a contemporary replacement pump station that would harmonise with the surrounding neighbourhood, water and parks as an integral part of British Columbia’s Capital Regional District upgrade plans.  The architectural solution for the Craigflower Pump Station is contemporary in its palette with natural tones of the stone and concrete, abundant amounts of glass, exposed wood structure beams. The aesthetic character and natural beauty of the  site drove the architectural response in an effort to soften the heavy industrial qualities of the pump station project while trying to  harmonize the overall facility within the parkland setting. An important element of the structure is the curved metal roof that ascends towards the east supported by a row of posts and struts. These architectural expressions frame the large, east facing clerestory windows that allow plenty of natural lighting into the building. To complement the rustic character of the building, a wrought iron screen is used to hide the tanks at the Northeast side. The scale of the building on the site allows for ample screening and landscaping.
