Constructed in 1890, this 2-storey Heritage-listed building forms part of the Dawson National Historic Site. The building was in very poor condition, having had multiple non-sympathetic occupancies, poor long-term maintenance, and exposure to harsh environmental conditions.

It is being restored under the supervision of the Federal Heritage Building Review Office (FHBRO) and to the Standards & Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada.

Ratio has been engaged in the phased upgrade of the Former Territorial Courthouse in Dawson City, Yukon, on behalf of Parks Canada and Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC). Our involvement started in 2017 with a Schematic Plan, in the form of a master planning document that analyzed in detail the remaining heritage value, reviewed the extensive historical research and documentation available. The Schematic Plan led to a staged restoration plan that factor in temporary protection of significant fragile heritage elements, a limited construction season, and intermittent funding.

Phase 2 is underway for a complete structural upgrade, including the unusual wood-framed underground foundation structure, which lies close to a flood plain and is subject to periodic permafrost effects. A new standing-seam metal roof will be provided, to match the existing obsolete roof.

Phase 3 will include the complete restoration of the building envelope, including the historic cladding, re-construction of historic fenestration patterns on some facades, new membranes, and insulation of the exterior walls including added interior storm windows.
